The Main Beach: vibrant and central
The main beach of Ostend runs from the Visserskaai in the west to Mariakerke in the east, a distance of approximately 4 kilometres. This part of the beach is the busiest and best equipped: Beach huts: available for rent from Strandcabine VZW, rates approximately €15-25 per day depending on the season. Beach bars and catering on the promenade and on the beach itself. Lifeguards present from June to September, supervised swimming zone marked with buoys. The beach is widest at the level of Casino-Kursaal: approximately 120-150 metres from promenade to waterline at low tide.
Mariakerke Beach: quiet and spacious
Mariakerke is the quietest section of the Ostend beach and lies approximately 2 kilometres east of the city centre. The beach is less wide here but also less crowded, even in high season. Ideal for: families with young children, people seeking peace, dog owners (dogs permitted in certain zones). Parking: car park on Duinenweg, free in the off-season, paid in summer months (approximately €1.50 per hour).
Raversijde Beach: nature and bunkers
The beach at Raversijde, west of the city centre, borders the Provincial Domain Raversijde with the famous Atlantikwall bunkers. This is the most unspoilt part of the Ostend coastline. No beach huts, no beach bars, no crowds. Ideal for walkers, photographers, and people seeking an untouched coastline. Combination tip: walk from Raversijde beach through the dunes to the Atlantikwall museum. A half-day activity for the whole family.
