The Coastal Tram: experience the entire Belgian coast by tram

The De Lijn coastal tram runs from De Panne to Knokke: 67 kilometres along the entire Belgian coast. This is the longest tram route in the world running entirely in an urban area. From Ostend you can travel in both directions: Towards Knokke (east): stops at De Haan, Bredene, Blankenberge, Zeebrugge, and Knokke. Towards De Panne (west): stops at Raversijde, Middelkerke, Westende, Nieuwpoort, Koksijde, and De Panne. Family day pass: approximately €20-25 for 2 adults + 2 children (children under 6 free).

Atlantikwall Museum: history in an engaging way

The Provincial Domain Raversijde preserves the best-preserved section of the Atlantic Wall, the defensive line Nazi Germany built from Norway to Spain. The bunkers, trenches, and gun emplacements are accessible to visitors. Audioguides available for children (separate child-friendly version). Opening times: April to November, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00. Closed Monday. Prices: adults €8, children 6-12 years €5, under 6 free. Tip for parents: bring boots if it has rained. The trenches can be muddy and children WILL want to explore them.

Beach and water sports for children

The Ostend beach is particularly well suited for children: Sandcastle building: the fine sand of Ostend beach is perfect. Spades and buckets are for sale in the shops on the promenade. Bodyboarding: for children from age 8. Rental at Surfers Paradise on the beach, approximately €10 per hour. Beginner lessons available. Beach playground: on the main beach in high season there are set-up playgrounds with slides and climbing frames. Warning for parents: always keep an eye on children in the water. The North Sea has strong currents and waves can be unexpectedly large.
