Beach and sea: the best of the Belgian coast
The beach at Ostend stretches 10 kilometres and reaches 150 metres wide at its broadest points. The main beach along the promenade is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Further along lie quieter beaches such as Raversijde beach and Mariakerke beach. Beach volleyball, kitesurfing, and sailing schools operate from May to September. Beach huts on the promenade can be rented by the day or week. For more adventurous visitors, Surfclub Surfers Paradise offers lessons and equipment rental. From our apartment on the 16th floor, you have a direct view of the beach. Two minutes from the lift to the water.
Culture and museums: more than just the beach
Ostend has a surprisingly rich cultural scene. The three main museums: MuZee (Museum for Modern Art) shows works by James Ensor, Spilliaert, and other Flemish masters. Entry approximately €10. Closed on Mondays. KMSKO (Royal Museum of Fine Arts Ostend) is dedicated to the art of James Ensor, whose home can also be visited as the Ensor House on Vlaanderenstraat. Atlantikwall Open Air Museum in Raversijde displays the well-preserved World War II bunkers of the Atlantic Wall. Walking distance from city centre: 4 kilometres. The Casino-Kursaal, built in 1953, offers roulette and poker alongside concerts, shows, and exhibitions year-round.
Food and drink: the best restaurants on the Belgian coast
Fresh fish and seafood are at the heart of Ostend cuisine. The fishing quay near the Visserskaai offers the freshest catch. Ostend oysters and mussels from the oyster beds are world-famous. Recommendations within walking distance of our apartments: Vistro: fish restaurant on the promenade, reservation strongly recommended in high season. Freshly caught sole, turbot, and shrimp. The Diving Board: bistro on the promenade with terrace and sea views, casual lunches and evening menu. Shrimp croquettes are the local comfort food: crispy pastry, creamy North Sea shrimp filling. Every brasserie serves them. Also try waterzooi, the Belgian coastal version of the famous Ghent stew.
