Safe beaches for children
The beaches of the Belgian coast are wide (over 100 m at low tide), sandy and gently shelving with no dangerous cliffs or rocks. The North Sea here has weak currents and none of the dangerous rip currents you find on Atlantic coasts. In high season lifeguards are stationed on every public beach in Ostend with the standard green/yellow/red flag system. Playgrounds are dotted along the dyke every few hundred metres. Public toilets, showers and drinking water fountains are plentiful. The combination of safe water, soft sand and clear sightlines (you can see your kids from a long way off) makes the Belgian coast genuinely relaxing for parents. You can sit with a coffee and actually read a chapter of your book.
The Coastal Tram and Plopsaland: kids' favourites
The Coastal Tram (Kusttram, run by De Lijn) is the longest tram line in the world and connects all 14 coastal towns over 67 km. Children love it. A tram ride along the sea, stops at every village, an ice cream here, a chip stand there, a day trip to another coastal town. A day ticket costs 10 euros for unlimited hop on, hop off. Buggies and kids under 6 are free. Plopsaland in De Panne (45 minutes by Coastal Tram from Ostend) is a big theme park with rides for all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. Plopsaqua is the connected water park, perfect for rainy days. Other family hits: the Earth Explorer in Ostend (interactive geology), the Fort Napoleon (a real Napoleonic fort with hands-on exhibits), and Ostend's indoor swimming pool with slides.
A flat saves a family money
On a family holiday a flat with a kitchen is almost always the smart option. Breakfast for 4 in a hotel costs 60 to 80 euros easily.
