North Sea holiday in Belgium: a familiar coast, with Belgian charm

For British and Irish travellers, the North Sea coast of Belgium is surprisingly familiar. Same sea, same sky, same bracing breeze. But with Belgian charm on top. Mussels and chips, a Trappist beer on a terrace, and a cycling culture where people will happily turn around to point you towards the best bakery. From central London it is 2h20 by Eurostar plus a 1 hour train. Shorter than the drive to Cornwall, with no traffic. The Belgian coast is not just a summer destination. From March to October the weather is good for beach walks, cycling, oysters and fresh fish. November to February has its own quiet charm: hot chocolate on the dyke, mussels in steaming pots, and far fewer people. The Ostend Carnival in February is genuinely worth the trip. DLVX Rentals offers two flats in Ostend, both bookable direct with no Airbnb commission. WhatsApp us on +32491597038 to check availability.

A familiar sea, a different country

The North Sea is the same on both sides of the Channel. But the way countries live with it is very different. In Belgium the sea is central to daily life. Fishermen land their catch each morning at the Vistrap. Restaurants serve what came in that day. The whole coast is connected by one tram line and one cycle path. You can be eating mussels in De Panne for lunch and oysters in Knokke for dinner without ever sitting in traffic. For anyone who loves British seaside life but wants to try something new, this is ideal. All the familiar elements (the bracing breeze, the dunes, the fish and chips equivalent, the long beach walks) plus mussels and chips, Trappist beer, art nouveau buildings and prices that stay reasonable. A 3 course lunch with wine: 30 to 40 euros. A pint of Belgian beer: around 4 euros.

When to visit the Belgian coast

March to May: quiet beaches, fresh weather, perfect for walks and city breaks. June to August: warm, busy, full beach season with water you can swim in if you are British about it. September to October: late summer, beautiful light, fewer crowds, still warm enough for terraces. November to February: quiet, authentic, perfect for those who love good food and big walks. The Ostend Carnival in February is a properly mad weekend, decades of tradition, and absolutely unmissable. DLVX Rentals is open year round. The Beachfront Skyline Retreat with its huge windows is particularly atmospheric in autumn and winter when storms roll in over the North Sea and you watch them from the warm.
